Asking a Shadow to Dance is a generative - kinetic sculpture in three dimensions, created by studio u2p050 in homage to Vera Molnar.

The generative protocol that shaped the sculpture is inspired by Vera Molnar’s long standing research on the magic square mechanic.

u2p050 further dives into this mathematical protocol and expresses it in a three dimensional space. u2p050 compiled a generative algorithm to produce different paths across the magic square to generate a set of squares sculpture iterations.

u2p050 tried to set a space of trust with the algorithm, a trust into the shapes of the computer’s vision.

A generative sculpture in three dimensions by u2p050 In its final form, the sculpture functions as a visual and musical instrument, creating sounds and lights that perpetuate its origin’s generative process. Speakers placed inside the metal bars make the structure vibrate according to the generative magic square algorithms. The movements of the light and sound are drifting across the geometrical steel layers of the structure, creating abstract and sensible synesthetic iterations.
