Center for Networked Intimacy is dedicated to researching the development and maintenance of relationships in the digital era. Both romantic and platonic relationships have suffered due to the effects of social media on our already scattered brains; aside from not being able to focus on the people we’re physically with, the relationships we develop through social networks often don’t feel genuine because of their lack of physicality. The Center currently hosts workshops as a way to encourage conversations around the mutations of relationships with the means of technology.

The artificial nature of relationships formed with the help of technology has been becoming increasingly apparent since the invention of social networks, and the feelings of alienation and loneliness only escalated during the Covid-19 pandemic which fostered an environment that promoted online connection.

The Center for Networked Intimacy invites you to a workshop during which the participants are invited to make audio valentines to a person they feel close to only through social media. The participants first follow a presentation that introduces the notion of "ambient awareness" - a key term for the creation of the postcards, as it refers to knowing about another's actions, thoughts and experiences without having to be near the person physically, and without specifically requesting such information. Following the presentation the participants reflect on a recipient of the card - a person they are ambiently aware of - and go on to create the physical cards while recording a personalized audio message to the person they've fallen out of touch with.
