Homogenitus

by Marie-Julie Bourgeois, produced by Crossed Lab
2022

Homogenitus questions the notions of light and darkness in relation to technology. The relationship between art, science and climate is at the heart of the issues at stake through its critical, surrealist and ideological dimensions. Various digital entities allow us to enter the narrative: the solar geo-engineering start-up nubus.fr, the artivitects' collective fakecloud.fr and the interactive installation Homogenitus, which allows us to generate clouds via a mobile application.

Homogenitus are anthropogenic artificial clouds generated by human activities - classified in the International Cloud Atlas since 2017 by the WMO. In the face of global warming, solar geoengineering techniques (SIG), such as Solar Radiation Modification (SRM), propose to produce artificial clouds to increase - theoretically - the albedo, these controversial technologies bring hope and fear with irony: producing clouds to reduce the greenhouse effect... These technologies question scientific codes and raise ethical questions: When the atmosphere becomes opaque, how can we project ourselves towards new horizons?

Homogenitus is a cloud generation performance via a mobile interface. The spectators can model night clouds and thus generate a micro-climate in real time. This performance illustrates the paradox of weather control: clouds are generated from humidity, pressure and temperature data but their generation also disrupts the local weather. Participants can choose the type of cloud (morphology, size, particles...) directly from their phone, this data will be sent to the cloud machine. The echo of the cloud will be visible for several days depending on the weather conditions and its dispersion will appear on a map. The user will be able to follow the evolution of his cloud.

The public is invited to generate their own particle clouds from their smartphones. The optimization of the cloud production is based on local data and an AI program. Subtle irony, these clouds, at first elegant and majestic, will progressively escape the control of the geo-engineers, threatening the public with their capricious and uncontrollable behaviour...
