Maskmaker is a VR adventure game based on the exploration of a magical world: the Masks Realm. At the beginning of the game, players discover the abandoned store of an old maskmaker long gone. By accessing his secret workshop, and wearing the first mask they have created, they gain access to this realm. Their quest is to discover who the mysterious Prospero, King of this world, is and what happened to the old Maskmaker and his previous apprentice. The crafting of new masks, using the models and ingredients found in the realm, will allow players to embody different characters, the last "guardians" present in this world, and to progress through the different levels of the game thanks to them.
After A Fisherman's Tale, which was our first game, we wanted to do something more ambitious, both in terms of length and of a more open universe. So we designed Maskmaker to give players a strong sense of presence, freedom and wonder at the landscapes of the different biomes they explore, a sense of being fully part of this world.
We did a lot of research beforehand, on different countries and different cultures where masks have a particular importance (South Pacific for the archipelago, Nepal and Tibet for the mountains, for example...). This is what gives this visual singularity to each of the biomes. Another common point to these cultures is their particular relationship to nature and shamanism, which is found throughout the game, especially through the ingredients, from the fauna and flora of each biome, which are used to make masks. During their adventure, players are led to create masks inspired by these different cultures, traveling to discover new motifs to advance their art.
