Jewish families, who were victims of persecution, sent thousands of letters to the Vichy authorities, headed by Marshal Pétain. These letters have been brought to light by the historian Laurent Joly who found them in the archives of the Commissariat-General for Jewish Affairs, a kind of French ministry of anti-Semitism over the World War II.
We have chosen twelve letters which highlight the persecution system of the Vichy regime and allow us to get closer to the imaginary of the reprobates, contrasting with the stereotype of passive victims.
These twelve letters, called Pleas, were written between 1941 and 1942. They are precious testimonies of a dark period in our history.
The proposed digital conversations are fictional adaptations of these letters. They were written based on precise biographical and historical elements. These conversations immerse users in the World War II and occupation context in France.
While remaining faithful to history, the digital language allows us an almost physical relationship to these archives.
