Vidéo-mallette

by Jérôme Lopez
2019

The video-mallette offers an original artistic approach connected to an audience, a community, and a specific territory. It is a blend of video and sound art, collected voices, and digital creation. Initially conceived as a live video/audio performance tool developed by the artist, it also enables all audiences (children, adults) to create a participatory video work, which can later be presented to the public in the form of a film or performance, both indoors and outdoors (especially using video mapping), or as an installation.

The video-mallette is a small illuminated and back-filmed glass-topped table. It enables the production of a video stream using photos, personal or everyday objects, plants, etc. which are manipulated by the user. The image is captured by the computer before being sent back to the projector, with or without digital processing. This continuous stream, which can also be painted or drawn on, is supplemented with new media such as objects, photos, paint, and video.

A sound looping device is also used, allowing the diffusion of collected sounds as well as acoustic work to create sound textures with the same objects. The video case was designed with minimal resources, using repurposed materials (a small transformed suitcase, modified camera, open-source software) in a low-tech and ecological approach.

A video case, in its performative or participatory creation form, takes place over at least three days at each location. On the first and second days, there is time for meeting with the site, the local area, and the participant group, as well as presenting the video case. From this process, exploration themes emerge, along with recordings (or soundscapes, field recordings), objects to be retrieved, and instant photos to be taken. At the end of the day, Jérôme Lopez may work alone on-site, where the public showing will take place, setting up the projector and potentially creating a video mapping on a surface (wall, building, etc.).

On the third day, Jérôme processes the collected components: sounds, photos, objects, in preparation for the video case. The participant group works with him to prepare the performance that will be presented to the public. Participants get the chance to manipulate different aspects of the setup, explore the retrieved and sampled objects, deepen sound research, and use live video treatments. At least one public showing of this creative work is presented.
