Arcade | Sentimental consists of seven separate installations, shelters ranging from 1 x 2 meters to 3 x 5 meters in size, each spectator entering them at their own pace. Each box has its own script, its guiding principles, its set design, its decoration, its tech. Everything is activated by the spectator themself using sensors and game interfaces, each person becomes their own racquet or joystick.
The cycle Arcade | Sentimental is a contemporary variation on the theme of the game of massacre: it is a spectacular release, allowing you to take out your anger on whatever image triggers you (a family figure, a boss, a superior, something symbolic). As scary as it may be satisfying, this alteration of what is technically possible allows us to fully feel what drives our ability to act.
Part of the attraction is the structure itself, the idea of finding amusement inside it via the lighting, sound, colors and variety as well as the ability to knock down your own values during the time you play the game, making Arcade | Sentimental a way to channel real arcade games, the ones you’d play at a county fair, a circus, even inside a music hall.
The musical and acoustic effects, the choice of colors and the unexpected interactivity are essential elements in this playful dramatization. It is a performance because there are specific rules and therefore consequences, and its interpretation changes depending on who is participating. The script and the text are to be experienced as well as seen: the visitor is at once an actor and a spectator.
