La trahison

by Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet and Sébastien Robert
Available in February 2025

To draw up a sound portrait of a territory, you have to collect its memories, meet its musicians and inhabitants, and capture its atmosphere. Listening to the stories, repertoires and sounds of Aubrac, Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet and Sébastien Robert carried out this investigative work in May 2023, giving rise to a creation halfway between improvised music and radio documentary.

In this contemporary reinterpretation of Aubrac's heritage, the two artists use the stories they have collected to create a narrative based on archive sounds from the 1960s, when the CNRS began collecting data to study the life, customs and traditions of the livestock farmers in this region of the Massif Central. Following on from the projects undertaken by the two artists in relation to the oral and cultural heritage of certain regions or groups of people, La trahison raises the question of transmission. How to deal artistically with the possible disappearance of an artistic practice, a skill or a repertoire. By using recordings of traditional pieces to create new compositions, and by giving a voice to ethnomusicologists, collectors and musicians both past and present, the two artists also address the question of hybridisation and the transformation of the region's musical corpus over time. By manipulating raw materials, the two artists aim to go beyond simple documentation and move towards more contemporary forms that pay tribute to this intangible heritage. The experimental reinterpretation they are proposing, like the traditional repertoires in constant movement, is an attempt to open up new artistic perspectives to a whole range of sounds, melodies and songs from Aubrac.
