Europe is a safe haven for populations weakened by wars, conflicts, and intolerance. The increase in demands for accommodation leads governments to tighten access conditions. This is a fact. This state of affairs obliges us to put the most creative methods at the service of the integration of those who obtain this right of asylum. In this, fiction is a remarkable tool! It complements traditional teaching by transmitting not only our language but also our cultural codes and values.

The first season of Pas en préfecture, broadcast on our channel, is relayed by TV5Monde on its website and teaches French through a pedagogical device.

Our skits are based on real-life situations adapted for the screen. My co-screenwriter, Flavien Rochette, has spent considerable time at the Prefecture assisting asylum seekers, giving us a unique edge in crafting these stories. We collaborate with refugee actors selected from the Workshop of Artists in Exile, which adds authenticity and depth to our productions. Our skits are specially tailored to appeal to vulnerable populations who may lack the opportunity to learn about their host country in traditional classrooms. Through playful scenes, they learn language, appropriate behaviour, and receive legal advice.

Season 2 of Pas en préfecture is currently in production and will be more inclusive. Out of the 29 episodes written, four will be shot in sign language with two Moldovan refugees who are deaf.
