Founded in 2001 by Stephan Boschat and Edmond Tourriol, MAKMA is specialized in illustrations and comics. The team’s artists work on each step of the creative process: writing, pencilling, inking, coloring, lettering. MAKMA brings together more than 300 comic authors coming from all over the world and who can operate with every style: bande dessinée, American comics, mangas, webtoons. We have nicknamed those authors “The Makmen”. Among a few of MAKMA’s projects, we can mention Banc de Touche (bande dessinée), Z United (webtoon), Amour Sucré (euromanga) and Urban Comics (BD/manga).
A comic is made through teamwork. The writer is responsible for the story. The artist pencils the pages, and is eventually helped by an inker. The colorist brings a certain life to the art by giving it volume and perspective. Finally, the letterer puts the text, the dialogues, and even sometimes the onomatopoeias (Sound FX) on the comic pages. In order to work together more efficiently, we have decided to gather in a studio. Everyone involved in the projects knows the strengths of the other members of the group and the regular exchanges that we share together allow us to improve our creations even more.
MAKMA essentially works on two fronts. First and foremost, our objective is to tell stories. Stories that we care about and that we want to show the public in the form of a comic. To do so, we put up projects that we submit to publishers. That is how projects like Banc de Touche, Bayou Girl, Last Seduxion or Zeitnot came to be for instance. Furthermore, we also do some works that are commissioned by publishers or companies (corporate comics). That is how we ended up working on the webcomic Urban Rivals and on the euromanga Mind: Code Neon.
Our translation and adaptation of American comics activities for the French market works the same way. We’ve worked on the French version of the greatest superheroes: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, the X-Men, Spider-Man, the Avengers … as well as more recent ones like Invincible. Aside from superheroes, let’s also not forget the Walking Dead series, which is one of Delcourt’s greatest successes!
