The Castaways invites participants to explore a fantastical realm whose secret entrance lies within the theater stage. In this land, known only to actors, dwell the spirits that sleep beneath the stage, waiting to inhabit the body of the actor-medium to speak. Les Naufragé·es offers a fictional journey to another world, freely inspired by the myths underpinning Japanese theater. The journey to this world beneath the stage allows participants to experience a fundamental truth of the actor’s craft: a single body can hold multiple lives.
Les Naufragé·es facilitates this discovery through a one-hour self-performance: with no actors or dancers present in the space, participants are guided by an inner voice through spatialized audio delivered via headphones. This voice narrates a unique journey to each participant, as they realize how their actions interweave with those of others. Together, they create a tapestry of small gestures, collectively conjuring a narrative that affirms the existence of ghosts.
This immersive experience is an international co-production between Tamanoir Immersive Studio (France) and Art & Essai (Canada). It was supported by CNC and SODEC and developed at CentQuatre-Paris, Stereolux, and Anis Gras.
