Desiring Machines is an immersive mechanical sound installation. It is made of several complex totemic objects from which grow several sound objects and mechanisms; with sound ranging from percussion to sound texture. Each « totem » is made of several idiosyncratic sound personalities.
The whole thing is evocative of a mechanical forest where machines would have grown from the soil and branched out; bringing back to life out of order; obsolete everyday objects; instruments mechanisms; which would have started moving on their own; fragile; awkward; emotional vestiges of the human who used to be there.
In line with previous works, the piece favors dadaist and poetic hijacking of everyday objects and the exploration of the sounds coming out of them, the awe for movement, the fragility of emotional machines, and the emergence of life and chaos appearing from a deterministic programmation.
The piece immerses the audience in a complete scenography. From calm and contemplative ambiance appear more frantic and chaotic elements which slowly takes over; in a musical composition sometimes melodic; sometimes noisy.
The installation is made out of an about fifteen minutes loop; the audience can roam freely; or seances can be organized at regular intervals. The ensemble is supported by a dynamic lighting scenography, showing the minutia of each object.
The different elements are chosen to work together in a coherent composition with different vibes; contemplative; frantic and rhythmic; noisy.
The scenography is based on three « totems » where both mechanical actuators and sound objects are affixed; on each one four or five objets; illuminated with integrated lights. The whole thing suggests a a surreal; always moving landscape, from which the human disappeared; in which the audience can freely roam; choosing their own visual and sound perspective.
The installation is in line with previous works; « Cliquetis » ; then « Machines à Rien »; and invites the audience to explore new sonic territories in a space transformed anew.
