Digital Swamp

by Mikhail Margolis
2023

"As our world increasingly transitions into digital form, breaking away from its physical roots, we are prompted to ponder our future. The immersive installation «Digital Swamp» enables visitors to metamorphose into encoded amoebas. In this transformation, their movements become the sole remnants of their human identity. As they traverse a terrain made up of thousands of keys, these movements are digitally recorded, creating a distinct, interactive representation of each individual's presence.

Upon entering a softly-lit space, visitors encounter a unique floor composed of thousands of keyboard keys. As they traverse this tactile landscape, celestial music echoes throughout, drawing them deeper and making the experience irresistibly enchanting. This ‘Digital Swamp’, a creative expanse of glowing mechanical keyboards, acts as a giant sensor, capturing and transforming motion into digital form.

While visitors wander across the floor, all key presses are recorded and processed, and the movements are transformed into a one-minute abstract animation. This process effectively strips away the complexities of the visitor's personality, retaining only their movement as a distilled essence of their identity.

After this immersive experience, visitors transition to another room, brightly lit like a laboratory. Here, a machine dispenses a sticker bearing a unique QR code, a digital token of their journey.

Upon scanning this code at a nearby device, visitors can watch their personalized animation come to the center on a wall-mounted screen and after a minute, gently dissolve among the company of other digital amoebas. Following their animation's gradual merge with other digital amoebas, visitors get a chance to see themselves from a new perspective. In the experience’s final act, spectators are invited to place their QR code sticker on the wall, thereby joining a collective digital swamp.

As visitors walk away from this experience, their digital animated bodyprint remains, long after they are gone, unique yet indistinguishable amidst the myriad of other traces...
