Follow Spot

by Samuel Bianchini
2006

A large circular white-light projector, a kind of "follow spot," comes to life. Its movements constantly vary, seeming hesitant, as if searching as much as being searched for: sweeping motions, skittering, stops and starts, and uncertainties give the machine an almost human quality. It remains unclear whether these movements are dictated by an absent operator or by the equally absent subject, sought after by a beam typically used to track and highlight a solo performer.

This is a solo that recalls, like the hollow of something, the presences that seem to motivate its movement, as much as it refers to itself in the present time of a live performance wherein the machine is simultaneously the equipment and the main protagonist.
