I learned the French language, so to speak, at the same time as my parents, when we arrived in Corsica in the early 80s. Throughout my childhood, I heard my mother in particular inventing words that straddled French and Portuguese: creations that always made the family smile, and which I had promised myself as a child would one day compile into a dictionary. Over time, I observed that this pollination between languages existed in all binational families, and after starting to collect family creations, I thought that the project shouldn't be limited to Franco-Portuguese fusion, but rather open up to all the languages of French immigration.
Thus was born The Fusionary: a participatory dictionary of words resulting from the fusion of two languages, French and a foreign or regional language. Its aim is to archive this linguistic inventiveness while promoting French multiculturalism.
