Ola

by Arnaud Laffond
2024

Ola is a contemplative and participatory work on the theme of sport in response to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The video shows what emotions spectators can experience and this idea of belonging to a group during such events. With the gesture of Ola, a universal movement that I staged with work on accumulation. Starting from the individual to the group that mixes, where the contours fade in the end. This project was carried out in collaboration only with people living or working near the Chapel, which is its only venue.

Participatory and contemplative work exhibited outdoors for 3 months at Porte de la Chapelle, Paris 18th arrondissement. With Ola, the idea is to convey the emotions evoked by sports, how spectators can feel involved, and transform that into a general sense of communion. It involves moving from the individual to the group, from figurative to an abstract mass where colors and shapes explode, much like the feelings that engulf us when we watch sporting events such as the Olympic Games. The ola gesture is a universal movement, easy to replicate, which on a large scale, like in a stadium, allows the sensation of a wave that spreads across the stands.

This project involves repetition and accumulation, where I requested a musical arrangement from musician and artist Charlie Aubry for Dommage, one of his creations that perfectly aligns with this concept. Charlie Aubry's installations are akin to the accumulations of Jason Rhoades, but with each element connected to another, generating surprising causalities like a disruptive organism that continually generates and specifies its own organization.

For the production, I decided to collaborate only with people living or working in Porte de la Chapelle, the sole location for this project. This allowed me to fully explore the participatory aspect and gather their direct reactions to the event of the Olympics. After conducting several impromptu castings and with their permission, I scanned the faces and bodies of the various participants. I then recreated these scans in 3D, animated them, and created a multitude of compositions by staging them. I only modified their clothing to create a more varied color palette, establishing a rhythm in the different transitions.

This project was commissioned by the City of Paris, @mairie18, for the creation of videos on the theme of sports for @paris2024. The project is led by Manifesto, Claire Cousin, in collaboration with CONCEPTO. Inauguration in September 2024.
