Lumières ! is an interactive and immersive virtual reality tour offering an exploration of light from the candle lantern to the 21st-century led. A rich sound environment constitutes an eloquent non-verbal guide for the visitor, as he or she embarks on a nocturnal journey through time, from the late medieval era to the connected city of tomorrow.

Strolling through the 7 successive scenes, each devoted to a different time period, we discover the technical evolution of urban lighting. Savvy staging emphasizes the impact, sensory or spectacular, of the different city lights, surrounded by historical context. Events are triggered as the visitor advances, step by step, interacting with objects that are part of the set. Entertaining and beautiful, the installation makes it clear that light has always played an essential role in social life and travel after sundown.

Each visitor is equipped with a backpack, headset, and joystick. Several people can explore the experience at the same time, if they enter one by one, every few minutes. To avoid collisions, a silhouette will be assigned to each visitor to signal his or her presence to others, who may be in the same space.

Set designs guide the visitor, before and after the experience. It starts in the lobby, where we await admission to the experience. Leaving the experience, par ticipants can peruse the historical archives used to create the experience, and variousdocuments illustrating the digital fabrication of the experience.

Lumières ! was awarded with the writing and new-media development grants of the CNC (French National Cinema Center), with the support of the region Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
